Paul Skins (22, Pittsburgh Pirates), a “monster rookie” who made a splash in the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) with his huge fastball this season, was selected as the National League (NL) Rookie of the Year as expected.

Skins was selected as the NL winner in the “Rookie of the Year” announced on MLB Network on the 19th (Korea Standard Time). He received the first place vote from 23 out of 30 voting members from the American Baseball Journalists Association (BBWAA). The remaining seven received the second place vote, and became the winner with 136 points in total.

San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill, who played as Kim Ha-sung’s teammate this season, came in second with 104 points with seven first-place votes and 23 second-place votes. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Churios came in third with 26 third-place votes, and Chicago Cubs Japanese pitcher Shota Imanaga came in fourth with four third-place votes.

Skinny’s winning the honor is a result that is expected. Skinny’s debut in the 토토사이트 league came just one year after being drafted by Pittsburgh as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 Rookie Draft. In 23 starts, he recorded an impressive 11 wins, 3 losses and 1.96 ERA.

The average on-base allowed per inning was only 0.947. He struck out an average of 11.5 and walked only 2.2 times per nine innings. He also played as a starting pitcher in the National League at the All Star game and was listed as a finalist for the Cy Young Award.

According to “Baseball Servant,” an MLB data site, Skins averaged 98.8 miles (159 kilometers) in four-seam fastballs this season. He not only threw fastballs but also used various breaking balls including sinker, curveball, sweeper, slider and changeup.

With the win, Skins became the second player in the Pittsburgh club’s history to win the Rookie of the Year award since Jason Bay in 2004. He is also the fifth player who won the honor as the first overall pick, following Bob Horner (1978), Daryl Strawberry (1983), Bryce Harper (2012), and Carlos Correa (2015).

Meanwhile, New York Yankees right-hander Lewis Hill won the Rookie of the Year award in the American League.

Hill, who pitched in 151 ⅔ innings, allowed 104 hits, 77 walks, and struck out 171. His batting average was only 0.189.

Hill received 15 first-place votes, 10 second-place votes, and one third-place vote, scoring 106 points overall. He beat Baltimore outfielder Colton Kauser (101 points) by a hair’s breadth to receive the honor.

It is the first time in seven years that a Yankees player has won the Rookie of the Year award since Aaron Judge in 2017 and the 10th in his team’s career. It is the first time in 33 years as a pitcher since Dave Riegette in 1981.
