Paul Skinns (22) and Lewis Hill (26) of the New York Yankees have become the 2024 MLB Rookie of the Year. It is the first time in 43 years that a starting pitcher has won the Rookie of the Year award in the two major leagues since 1981.
At the MLB Rookie of the Year awards ceremony held on Sunday, Skins and Hill won the Rookie of the Year award in the National League and the American League, respectively. Skins swept 23 of the 30 first-place votes. Hill beat Baltimore outfielder Colton Kauser in a close game. He beat Kauser by a five-point margin with 106 points including 15 first-place votes.
Skins has long been considered the most promising rookie award in the National League. Rookie outfielders such as Jackson Merrill (San Diego) and Jackson Churio (Miladelphia Phillies) also performed well, but Skins was on a different level. He was drafted by Pittsburgh as the No. 1 overall pick in the rookie draft last year, and made his big league debut on May 12, less than a year later. His first appearance was somewhat disappointing with three runs in four innings, but he has had a scary run since then. In 23 appearances as a starter this season alone, he recorded 11 wins and 3 losses with an ERA of 1.96 in 133 innings, and struck out 170. The 170 strikeouts are the most in the history of Pittsburgh’s rookie pitchers.
ESPN reported that Meryl or Churio could have received the Rookie of the Year award if they were in another season. Meryl played in 156 games this year with 24 home runs and an OPS of 0.826. Churio (20), the youngest player in MLB, also played in 148 games with 21 home runs and an OPS of 0.791. However, Skins displayed overwhelming performance. He was charming not only in terms of skills but also in storylines. Skins, who wanted to become a fighter pilot, went on to the Air Force Academy and chose to become a baseball player after agonizing over his career until the very end. Olivia Dunn, the best gymnastics star in the U.S., is even more famous than Skins herself.
Skins became a star in his first year as an All-Star starting pitcher. His baseball card with his debut patch and autographed increased his value to more than 100,000 dollars. Skins, who is eyeing the next generation star even at the league secretariat, won the Rookie of the Year award as expected, ending his first year in the big league.
In a way, 토토사이트, the Rookie of the Year in the American League, is in contrast to Skinns. It took some time for him to show off his talent. He made his big league debut in 2021, but only pitched in six games. In 2022, he made one start and ended the season by allowing four runs in four innings. Last year, he had no record of taking the mound in MLB at all.
It was in full bloom this year. He started 29 times and recorded 15 wins and seven losses with an earned run average of 3.50 during 151.2 innings. His performance in May was particularly impressive. During 38.2 innings, he recorded six wins and no loss with 44 strikeouts and an earned run average of 0.70.
With Hill joining the team, the Yankees were able to stabilize the rotation by filling in the injury gap of ace Gerrit Cole. Hill won the Rookie of the Year title by beating out out outstanding competitors such as Bowser who hit 24 home runs.
Starting with the Rookie of the Year award, there will be awards to settle MLB this season including the Cy Young Award and the MVP Award. The Coach of the Year Award will be announced on Tuesday and the Cy Young Award on Monday. The MVP will be decided on Tuesday.
